Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (Puerto Princesa Underground River)

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines and is one of the most important conservation areas in the Philippines. It features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river which is directly connected in the South China Sea. The underground river includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers and is reputed to be the world’s longest underground river.

As as source of pride and beauty, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park has attracted increasing number of tourists ranging from hikers, photographers, nature lovers to foreigners who travel just to marvel to this wonderful God-given tourist haven.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park was established as a protected area in March 26, 1971 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation (PP) No. 835 and was formerly known as the St. Paul Subterranean National Park, consisting of three thousand nine hundred and one hectares (3,901). To adequately protect the watershed of the Underground River and ensure the long-term viability of significant biodiversity, Presidential Proclamation No. 212 was issued in November 16, 1999 expanding the area of the Park to 22,202 hectares.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park was nominated for the New 7 Wonders of the World together with the Chocolate Hills, Tubbataha Reef and Mayon Volcano. (http://www.new7wonders.com)
